Kilkunda House
Project Details
Set against the rolling hills and coastal winds of Victoria, Kilkunda Farm House began as a modest 1950s yellow-brick farmhouse—unassuming in presence, but full of untapped potential. Interior designer Claire Cau-Cecile was engaged to reimagine the home for a young family, transforming it into a warm, functional retreat while honouring its mid-century charm.
Tasked with maintaining the original footprint, Claire approached the renovation with subtlety and purpose. The home’s most compelling feature—its sweeping sea views—had been largely overlooked in the original layout. By opening up the floor plan, removing internal walls, and replacing dated windows with full-height doors, Claire created an open-plan kitchen and living space that now flows effortlessly onto a large timber deck—an alfresco area designed for family gatherings and coastal living.
Clever reconfiguration of the outdated wet areas allowed for the addition of a contemporary bathroom, ensuite and laundry. These new spaces were designed to balance functionality with a refined material palette, incorporating finishes that nod to the home’s architectural era while adding a modern softness. The outcome is a seamless transition between old and new—where heritage textures meet contemporary Australian living.
The result is a 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom home that feels both grounded and elevated. Kilkunda Farm House is a testament to Claire’s ability to merge architectural sensitivity with practical, family-first design—breathing new life into a well-worn coastal gem.
